Our first glimpse of the historic district – after checking into the hotel we defied the urge to rest our tired bodies and took to the streets. We had a map and knew we were walking towards the Duomo, but this view was still a small slap in the face – the first encounter with such a beautiful structure and the promise of what was to come.

A closer look at the Belltower – most often referred to as Giotto’s Campanile, the Belltower is a signature image of Florence and is the classic example of Florentine Gothic architecture. Completed in 1359 – twenty-two years after Giotto’s death – the structure is almost 280 feet high and contains seven bells.
